Showing guts
published: Saturday | December 3, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CONGRATULATIONS TO the Government of Jamaica for showing some guts by imposing visas on the Cayman Islands. The Government of Jamaica should also look at imposing visas on those from the Turks and Caicos, Anguilla and Bermuda, and any other dot who has the temerity to require visas from Jamaicans. These islands, neither singularly nor collectively, contribute with great significance to the island of Jamaica. They only want to laud their "booming" economy over Jamaica's head, believing that we are all working on sugar plantations down here and would love to grace their shores. It is time these people have some respect for Jamaica and Jamaicans.

Yes, our people do behave badly when they travel abroad. That is undeniable. However, if anyone is familiar with international labour markets, you will see that these people need Jamaican cheap labour, for if it were not for our workers, they could not be living the grand life they are living today. Most societies with high GDPs and high income per capita import cheap labour, as their own locals would never work for the pittance they pay Jamaicans. So, we do serve a purpose.

I am, etc.,

S.J.
