SHE Caribbean in seventh heaven
published: Monday | December 5, 2005

Keisha Shakespeare, Staff Reporter

IT STARTED out as a local supermarket magazine in St. Lucia today it's at the doorsteps of all the Caribbean islands.

SHE Caribbean magazine began in 1998 as a free publication that has blossomed into a full-size glossy international magazine. By 2000, it spread across the Caribbean as a means of promoting and celebrating Caribbean women and the role they play globally and at home. Then it was published every three months, but now it's every two months.

Vanessa Henry, sales and distribution manager, on a trip to Jamaica last week said that though it was difficult to make it in the magazine industry, SHE has grown significantly. The content, including photographs, is consistent and the distribution is always on time, she added.

GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH JAMAICA

Henry told Flair that SHE has a great relationship with Jamaica. And the last three publications had Jamaican women on the covers. She added that the magazine had become a household name.

Currently, the magazine is celebrating its seventh anniversary and as a special tribute to their seven glorious years they are exploring the highs and lows, strengths and weaknesses, beauty and benevolence of Caribbean femininity. It will feature the latest covers, about small-town heros turned international superstars.

There will also be features on the latest on fashion trends in clothing and accessories, hair and make-up tips. As a woman's magazine, SHE strives to address issues affecting women everywhere. As such, there will be inspirational profiles on rising and accomplished West Indians, such as the Baroness Valrie Amos, a Guyanese who is a leader in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom. One can also enjoy regular travel pieces on Caribbean destinations, their people and culture.

The November/December edition is right on time for Christmas and readers can catch the spirit of the season with features on gift buying, decorating and cooking. Plus, there is a tribute to the Men We Love, the publisher's seven favourite covers; seven must-have health checks; seven style tips; seven friends not to be without; seven wonders of the West Indies and more.

SHE's special seventh anniversary issue is having a great promotion where one lucky reader will win a chance to be a co-host on BET. The competition opened in November and runs through January 30, 2006. Entry forms are in the November/December issue. To win, the contestants have to fill out an original form and send a demo tape of him/herself to SHE magazine. Added information on the competition will be available in the magazine for November/December.
