Labourites in a sea of green
published: Monday | December 5, 2005

Robert Lalah, Staff Reporter

THE PUBLIC session of the annual Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) conference, held yesterday at the National Arena, was quite an event. The facility was jam-packed with hundreds of party supporters, most of whom were dressed in green, from head to toe.

The crowd started to build from about 9 o'clock in the morning. A steady flow of buses packed with party supporters, waving flags and ringing bells, streamed unto the grounds of the arena throughout the day.

From leaves off trees to beer bottles, the party supporters used everything green they had to show their allegiance. Quite a number of men wearing green ski masks, and others whose faces were completely covered with green handkerchiefs, raised a few eyebrows.

Members of Parliament used different ways to make their entrance into the arena. Some were hoisted unto the shoulders of constituents, while others walked in surrounded by drum-beating supporters. The event made the day of many vendors who were positioned at the facility since daybreak. Soup, chicken, pork and even sun-glasses were on sale and the festive party supporters took full advantage of the convenience.
