Ganja seized on wharf in Jamaica
published: Tuesday | December 6, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

NARCOTICS DETECTIVES have seized a 40-foot container, with a large quantity of ganja, which was found in the flooring.

The shipment, which included assorted food items, was found at Kingston Terminal and destined for London in the United Kingdom.

"We have not yet completed stripping the container," acting commander of the Narcotics Division, Superintendent Carlton Wilson, told The Gleaner yesterday.

Reports are that the container, which was being shipped by a private individual, was intercepted by members of the Customs Contra-band Enforcement Team (CET) Sunday afternoon, shortly after it was X-rayed and the illegal drug found bolted to the flooring.

DUTCH NATIONAL NABBED

But while the police were advancing their investigation into the matter, their attention was switched to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, where a Dutch national was nabbed, several minutes after she arrived on a flight from Curaçao.

"She is now at the Kingston Public Hospital. So far she has passed out 69 pellets of cocaine," said a spokesperson from the Customs Department.

Commenting on the seizure of narcotics since the start of the year, Superintendent Wilson said there has been a significant reduction in cocaine finds.

"We are getting the same feed-back from overseas too, that not much cocaine is coming out of Jamaica," said Supt. Wilson.
