THE EDITOR, Sir:
EACH YEAR at this time the police force and the neighbourhood watch movement meet to assess their joint initiative in combating crimes in the broad landscape of the communities across the island. Last year the centrepiece was 'Operation King Fish'. No one can deny that this initiative has been a significant success. It was and has become the watchword, the rallying point of our neighbourhood watch meetings ever since. We dare not relax our 'watchfulness'. We must build on this with renewed vigour, especially as we view with some concern, the increased lawlessness and criminality in our beloved country.
On Sunday, November 6, the St. Mary Neighbourhood Watch Council organised a commemorative service at the Immanuel United Church, in Tower Isle, St. Mary. This was the 10th year of neighbourhood watch activities in the parish. St. Mary has been adjudged the leading parish of active neighbourhood watches in the country. It is significant that we have experienced the least occurrence of crimes throughout the island. We dare not relax until we achieve 100 per cent non-occurrence.
