Second monthly panel discussion on growth and development in Jamaica
published: Thursday | December 8, 2005

( L - R ) MUNROE AND DAVIS

THE CABINET Office will today hold the second in a series of monthly panel discussions aimed at reviewing Jamaica's progress towards growth and development.

Government Senator Professor Trevor Munroe, of the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, is one of several presenters slated to participate in the discussion. Also expected to make presentations are Dr. Carlton Davis, Cabinet Secretary and head of the Civil Service; and Dr. Herbert Thompson, president of Northern Caribbean University. The panelists will examine the topic, 'Good Governance: Perception versus Reality'.

Information Minister Burchell Whiteman will be the moderator.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the monthly discussion series are to analyse Jamaica's progress towards achieving growth and to determine the next steps to reach its national goals.

During the first panel discussion in November, it was revealed that government expenditure of $42 billion has been credited for the more than 50 per cent decline in poverty since 1992. This is according to Dr. Jaslin Salmon, national coordinator for the Poverty Eradication Programme in the Office of the Prime Minister.

At the same time, Robert Buddan, lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies, called for the establishment of a Ministry of Human Development to bring Jamaica's poverty to single-digit level.
