St Hugh's end Wolmer's quest
published: Thursday | December 8, 2005

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

WOLMER'S GIRLS' will not be repeating last year's feat of producing a double in the ISSA schoolgirls netball competition after their senior team went crashing out to St. Hugh's in the semi-finals at the Leila Robinson Courts yesterday.

The defending champions started well when their junior girls had an easy time of dispatching Ardenne in a 32-15 affair, that was, for all intents and purposes, done by half-time with Wolmer's leading 15-5.

In the other junior league semi-final another team had a chance to make it to two finals this season, as St. Hugh's, with a team to come later in the senior semi-finals took on Tarrant and their fairytale season.

HUNGRY TEAM

Tarrant were not to be denied and St. Hugh's had to suffer at the hands of a hungry team led by national under-16 player, Christina Solmon.

The 24-12 result could have been worse had it not been for a few errors on the part of Tarrant, who will now have to worry about Wolmer's Girls' in today's final set for 2:30 p.m. at the Leila Robinson Courts.

In the senior league, St. Hugh's stormed the Wolmerians in a first half performance that gave them an 18-11 lead. They improved in the second half to come out 37-21 winners.

This occurred just after Alpha Academy, who have been the surprise of the senior league, romped to a 32-21 win over Holy Childhood.

St. Hugh's and Alpha will meet in today's final, set to begin after the junior final at the same venue.

The rural finals are also on today at the G.C. Foster College with Cross Keys playing against Herbert Morrison in the junior final, while defending senior champions Denbigh play Holmwood. The junior game begins at 10:00 a.m., and will be followed by the senior match.
