Santos look to tag Meadhaven
published: Saturday | December 10, 2005

Howard Walker, Staff Reporter

FORMER CHAMPIONS Santos tackle Meadhaven United in the feature of five Jamaica National/KSAFA Super League games at the Bell Chung Oval today at 2:00 p.m.

The other games on are: Bull Bay welcome Greenwhich Town to the Bull Pen; Shortwood United host leaders August Town at Shortwood College; Mountain View United versus Rae Town at Excelsior High School and Barbican take on Police National at Barbican.

Santos, winners in 2003, currently occupy fourth position with eight points from four games and will be hoping to collect maximum points from newly-promoted Meadhaven. The David Hunt-coach Meadhaven are on five points from four games, just three behind Santos and will be hoping to snatch their second win of the season but Hunt knows it will be a tough task.

"My team is playing well but Santos will be a formidable team. They are past champions so it will be a tough encounter," said Hunt.

The core of the young Meadhaven team will be missing in action as several players represent Calabar High and will be in action against Godfrey Stewart in the Olivier Shield first leg final at Jarrett Park.

STEP UP

Captian Andrew Gibson, Gail Dixon, Omar Longbridge and All-Manning representative Dawayne Smith of Meadow-brook High will have to step up and secure victory.

Meanwhile, seasoned cam-paigner Santos will want to stay in touch with the leaders and could use their vast experience to secure all three points against their young opponents.

Carlton "Spanner" Dennis, veteran coach of Santos, said he will be looking to stay in touch with the leading team by utilizing his home advantage.

"Like any other game we are looking three points, especially playing at home. We have dropped four points and are trying to get back and you can't afford for the leaders to leave you," said Dennis.

Santos will rely on Fabian Nethersole, Raphael Ballentine, Victor Riles, Herbert Allen and debutant Damion Pink, who represented Mona High in last year's Manning Cup.

Meanwhile Super League outfit Maverley/Hughenden travel to Winchester Park, St George's College, to take on Major League team Cavalier in the KSAFA play-off for the Red Stripe Champions Cup.

Cavalier are in the driver's seat, having defeated Elletson Flats 2-0 in the three-team play-off on Wednesday.

Two of the three teams will qualify for next year's Red Stripe Champions Cup KO competition.
