Lonely at Christmas
published: Monday | December 12, 2005

Daviot Kelly, Staff Reporter

LET'S FACE it, feeling lonely can be a pain in that part of the anatomy used for sitting. It especially hurts during a festive season like Christmas.

You see Christmas brings some additional 'nice' feelings with it. The poinsettia and euphorbia are all around; the colours are out and just the whole air of the season has a certain magic about it. And like the good black magic that the old song talks about, it's better if you could share these nice feelings with somebody else.

Now ladies, two weeks ago we spoke about guys who dumped their girlfriends before Christmas for fear of money loss. Well, you'll be happy to know that some of us cherish the lady we're with and some wish they had one to spend money on.

ITS JUST ME

"I got used to having a girlfriend at this time of year but this time it's just me. The bad thing is that there's nothing you can do to substitute," says Tyrone.

At least Tyrone knows what it's like to have a girlfriend. Spare a thought for Daniel Kalliswho's as single as the ... every Christmas has been like Tyrone's current one.

"It's hard at Christmas especially because you see guys buying stuff for their girls and vice versa. Even if you go to parties, you're the lone ranger," he sighs. Josh Downing, an English native, understands how both guys feel and even a little further.

"You see, I've got no family here. So I'm working through the holidays and the friends I have don't do the family dinner thing," he pointed out.

Now let's clarify something. We're not just talking about those with no significant other. It also goes for those with no 'others' of any kind meaning, no family (at least not where they are), no friends, nada. People deal with loneliness in different ways. Some slouch on the sofa and watch television, others choose more devastating methods which might include a few guys named Wray and Nephew and Lascelles. That doesn't work! You'll still be alone when you wake up from your drunken stupor and the liver and kidney would have taken a beating!

So here are a few tips for the lonely at Christmas (and no, speed dating is not on the list!).

Activities such as singles vacations, home holiday movie marathons, holidays, around the world lunches and holiday feast cooking classes offer low-pressure fun that singles can enjoy solo or with friends.

Get involved with a charity. Donate your time to any organisation that needs the help and there are many of them.

The telephone. If ever there was a time to use the phone credit, this is it. Call the friend you haven't spoken to in years.

Take up a new hobby. If it's any fun, then it will stick with you long after the holiday is over.
