published: Monday | December 12, 2005

Arthur Green, Gleaner Writer

MORANT BAY, St. Thomas:

THE UPLIFTMENT Jamaica organisation is appealing to corporate entities to assist with the development of the old Goodyear factory in St. Thomas into a skills development complex.

According to chairman of Upliftment Jamaica, Gary Foster, the support is necessary to realise the prospects of the complex.

On Saturday night, Minister of Commerce, Science and Technology, Honourable Phillip Paulwell said there were plans to transform the old factory into a skills development centre.

Mr. Paulwell was speaking at the fifth annual Upliftment Jamaica Gala Fund-raiser in St. Thomas.

The facility which will be known as Upliftment Jamaica 21st Century, Skills Development Complex will provide educational and workforce training to residents through partnership with the public, private and non-profit sectors.

The centre will feature distance learning classes as well as hands on instruction in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Upliftment Jamaica, a non-profit organisation, operating out of White Horses, St. Thomas, is now celebrating its 6th year.
