Jamaica make winning start

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC:

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS Jamaica made a winning start at the seventh Caribbean Netball Association Under-16 tournament in St. Kitts, yesterday, beating Trinidad and Tobago 30-21.

Danielle Ellis led the scoring with 12 points, while Christina Salmon (11) and Vanessa Walker (7) netted the other points for Jamaica which led 15-11 at half-time.

The team, which is bidding to win the crown for the sixth time, returns to action today with a match-up against Grenada.

Meanwhile, Dominica stunned former champions St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) 22-14 when the tournament got underway on Saturday night at the Netball City, Warner Park.

Dominica rallied from a slight deficit in the first quarter to lead at the half and ran out easy winners over SVG.

Hosts St. Kitts and Barbados also registered wins on the opening evening. St. Kitts had a dominant outing on the night, crushing Grenada 31-10 on the back of quarterly leads of 8-3, 16-5, and 23-7.

Shooter Ronelle Morton (28/36) and Sheriffa White (3/7) at goal attack, scored for the home side, while Christa Stevens (7/13) secured most goals for the Grenadians.

In the night's other game, Barbados toppled Trinidad & Tobago 30-20 after leading the quarters 5-4, 18-8, 25-16.

Shooter Abeje Carrington (19/27) led the scoring for Barbados, while Jolisa Cooper (15/28) was T&T's high scorer.
