WITH CHRISTMAS soon upon us, the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is warning vendors and buyers alike to observe the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), reports JIS News.
The CAC wants vendors to issue proper receipts and when advertising goods 'on sale', to make them adequately available at that specific price, said CAC Chief Executive Officer Dolsie Allen at a recent JIS think tank session.
This is part of the CAC's recent public education campaign on the Consumer Protection Act.
"We do not intend to collect, what we want is compliance,"said Ms. Allen. Vendors, she added, should not "see the CPA as a weapon but as the new customer service manual." Fines levied under the act range from $50,000 to $2 million.
GRACE PERIOD
She said the CAC will, however, offer a grace period for vendors to adjust to CPA requirements. Further workshops are planned for those trading goods and services, with a special package being produced for vendors in downtown Kingston
Customers, she reminded, should always demand receipts from vendors.
All receipts should contain the following information:
* All information should be printed in English.
* Amount paid.
* Date of purchase.
* Description of goods.
