Food For the Poor expands shelter project
published: Tuesday | December 13, 2005

FINZI-SMITH

FOOD FOR THE POOR (FFP), the Caribbean's leading charity organisation and one of the co-recipients of the 2005 Gleaner Honour Award for voluntary service, has approved $2 million to expand and refurbish the Marie Atkins Night Shelter for the poor in downtown Kingston.

Food For the Poor's Executive Director, Bradley Finz-Smith, made the disclosure at the organisation's Christmas breakfast for the residents at the shelter.

He also noted that Victoria Mutual Building Society has donated $126,000 to the project.

"We are seeking to improve the shelter and by doing so help to create an environment in which the people who live there can feel a sense of home away from home. The construction work is necessary too, as every day more and more people are turning up for the kind of assistance that is given here," said Mr. Finzi-Smith.

This venture is another expression of support by the charity organisation towards the poor and impoverished.
