AFTER WEEKS of intensive investigation, the St. Catherine North homicide team took a 26-year-old man into custody for the killing of police sergeant,
46-year-old Donald Burke on Sunday.
The man, Michael Laing, a resident of New Nursery of Twickenham Park, St. Catherine, was picked up by the cops at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Burke, who had been attached to the Mobile Reserve at the time of his death, had been killed on October 11 at 12:30 p.m., after he went into the Spanish Town Village Plaza to conduct business.
It is alleged that after coming out of a business establishment, two men, one of whom was identified as Laing, accosted the policeman in the parking lot. A struggle developed during which Burke was shot several times. The men then escaped without taking the policeman's loaded pistol.
According to the homicide detectives, Mr. Laing was spotted in the area during a routine patrol. Upon seeing the lawmen, he ran, was chased and eventually held. The police are still trying to ascertain whether Laing has been involved in other murders in the police division. He will face the murder charge at a date to be announced later.
