JOURNALISM WEEK continues today with a Veteran's Luncheon at J Wray and Nephew's hospitality suite in St Andrew, commencing at 12 noon.
Noted sports journalist H.G Helps, retired sports journalist Roy Matthias, noted videographer José Walton and broadcaster Ms. Beverly Anderson-Manley will be honoured.
The week's events, organised by the Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ), commenced on Sunday with a church service at the Church of God of Prophecy on Maxfield Avenue in St. Andrew.
The week culminates with an awards ceremony on Thursday and Chairman and Managing Director of The Gleaner Company, Oliver Clarke will be the guest speaker.
The theme of this year's Journalism Week, "Fighting against Crime and Corruption", seeks to highlight the importance of effective journalism in Jamaica's struggle against crime.
"I would just like to urge all media workers to double their efforts to rid our country of the crime and corruption that are plaguing our society," Desmond Richards, PAJ president told The Gleaner yesterday.
The Press Association of Jamaica is a professional body representing journalists in Jamaica. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Association must be recommended by a recognised journalist, complete a membership form, and pay a membership fee of $1000, which grants full membership for a year.
Membership benefits, Mr. Richards said, include training scholarships which are usually given to three journalists to pursue studies at the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC). Mr. Richards noted that the Press Club would also be reopened to members by early 2006.
