St Mary gets 27 Justices of the Peace
published: Wednesday | December 14, 2005

TWENTY-SEVEN new Justices of the Peace (JPs) were sworn in to serve the parish of St. Mary, during a ceremony held at the Port Maria Civic Centre on Tuesday, December 6.

The function was presided over by Custos of St. Mary, Hon. A.A. 'Bobby' Pottinger. In attendance were Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, A.J. Nicholson, members of the St. Mary Lay Magistrates Association, family members and representatives from various government and non-govern-mental organisations in the parish.

The appointment of the new JPs brings to 285 the number of persons serving St. Mary in that capacity. In his address, Mr. Nicholson congratulated the new JPs and exhorted them to ensure that they make a special effort to live up to the high expectations of the office.

He encouraged the JPs to always act in the public interest, and in accordance with the public trust placed in them. He also admonished them not to use their position for their own advantage or to the disadvantage of others.

The custos congratulated the new JPs and urged them to assist in the development of their communities and to help those who were in need of guidance and proper direction.
