Christmas treat for the elderly
published: Wednesday | December 14, 2005

SEVEN HUNDRED children and 200 elderly citizens from Savanna-la-Mar and its environs in Westmoreland, will be hosted by the Westmoreland Parish Council at the Mayor's Christmas Treat at Independence Park in the town on December 21.

This year's treat has been made possible largely through the generous donation of $200,000 by Digicel to the council. The cheque was presented to Deputy Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Bertel Moore by Regional Sales Manager of Digicel, Joy Clark, at a meeting of the council, on December 8.

Councillor Moore, who chaired the meeting, said that the donations from Digicel was highly appreciated as it had pushed the amount collected so far to over $300,000.

"The parish council is happy for this timely and worthwhile gift from Digicel, as this will assist us at the council to extend the Christmas treat from 500 children and 100 adults to 700 children and 200 indigent adults this year. The day after the treat (December 22), the council will be staging the annual Christmas tree-lighting ceremony and would like to invite the citizens from the immediate areas to attend and participate in this occasion," the deputy mayor said.
