Young Girlz on a roll
published: Wednesday | December 14, 2005

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

A 51-11 PUMMELLING of Grenada led Jamaica's Junior Sunshine Girlz to their third victory in as many games at the Caribbean Netball Association's Jean Pierre Under-16 tournament in St. Kitts yesterday.

The Jamaicans gained the ascendancy very early in the game by pulling away to lead 9-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Things got worse for the Grenadians in the second quarter. Even though they increased their scoring tally they never slowed the Junior Sunshine Girlz, who raced to a 20-6 lead.

If that wasn't bad enough, Grenada were held scoreless in the third quarter while Jamaica piled on a mammoth 17 points to end at 37-6.

For the Jamaicans, Christina Salmon was in fine form. The tall goalshooter from Tarrant tormented her opposition with 26 goals from 27 attempts.

However, she wasn't the only threat as Danielle Ellis had 16 goals from 18 and Kerisa Kessna enjoyed a perfect night with nine from nine.

"They (Sunshine Girlz) have been playing well and they have improved with each game," said team manager Arlene Findlay after the game.

Thus far, the Jamaicans have had an easy time in the tournament, beating Trinidad and Tobago 30-21 on Sunday and Dominica 37-6 on Monday night.

However, Findlay has made it clear that things will get tougher.

"Barbados should be our biggest challenge and we will not take St. Kitts lightly. They are playing at home and they are playing well," she said.

"We don't think they can beat us but we won't be able to walk over them the way we have done with other teams up until this point," said Findlay.

Jamaica will now turn their attention to this evening's (5:15 p.m. Jamaica time) fixture against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
