THE JAMAICA Labour Party (JLP) says it is seeking clarity on the closure of Touchpoint Jamaica Limited, the company that bought the assets of the failed Netserv Jamaica Limited.
The party has called for Commerce, Science and Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell, and the National Investment Bank of Jamaica (NIBJ), to issue a clear statement on the status of the information technology company.
Yesterday, Mr. Paulwell admitted that Touchpoint has closed because it lost its major contract.
"The NIBJ is in negotiation with a number of companies which have expressed interest in acquiring Touchpoint's assets," he told The Gleaner.
In 2002, Touchpoint Jamaica Limited bought the assets of Netserv Jamaica Limited which had accumulated a $200-million debt.
In making the call, Senator Shirley Williams, Opposition spokesperson on industry, commerce, and investment, alleged that Touchpoint has quietly closed its operations and was being evicted from two floors it occupied at the NCB Towers in St. Andrew.
She added that the country must be told whether Touchpoint has honoured its commitment to buy the assets of Netserv for $240 million. Senator Williams also insisted that Jamaica should know the future of Touchpoint and its employees.
