WESTERN BUREAU:
MOUNT SALEM made it two wins from two starts in the 2005 Captain's Bakery/Western Super League yesterday afternoon when goals by Garth Johnson and Dwayne Chambers gave them a 2-1 win over Fogo in their big Zone A St. James derby at Jarrett Park.
"I though we played quite well but we were somewhat lucky as Fogo missed a penalty," said Mount Salem's coach Everton 'Bryna' Burnett. "Nonetheless, two wins from two games is a wonderful way to start the season so we are happy."
Moments after the game started, Mount Salem breached the Fogo defence when Rodney Barr broke free on the right flank. He crossed perfectly to Johnson in the goal area and he calmly side-footed into the goal, making the score 1-0.
Fogo should have drawn level in the 10th minute when Derrick Edwards broke clean through the Wadadah defence. However, his powerful grounder was brilliantly saved by a diving goalkeeper Garfield Johnson in goal for the Mt. Salem team.
With Fogo United fighting back and looking ominous in attack, they drew level in the 24th minute. A series of fumbles in the Mount Salem defence saw the ball falling to the unmarked Rydel Gayle. His close range shot gave the goalkeeper no chance, making the score 1-1.
A minute after the equalizer, Fogo got a glorious chance to grab the lead when they were awarded a penalty after goalkeeper Johnson fouled Edwards. However, the spot kick by skipper Christopher Harris was well saved by the diving goalkeeper Johnson. The half ended 1-1.
Down into second half play, Mount Salem again took charge and had Fogo on the run. They got glorious chances in the 66th and 69th minutes but both were wasted. Firstly, Johnson fumbled with the goalkeeper at his mercy and secondly, Dabby Little's fierce volley was brilliantly blocked by the goalkeeper.
In the 78th minute, Mount Salem got the all-important clincher when Johnson played a perfect pass to Chambers. He sped away from a number of chasing defenders and slotted past the advancing goalkeeper, making the final score 2-1.
