Jamaicans should demand more
published: Thursday | December 22, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a Jamaican living in Canada and I wonder what the reaction of the Canadian public would be if the Chief Justice of Canada made the same pronouncement as Chief Justice Wolfe? I can tell you, he wouldn't be Chief Justice for much longer. Jamaicans should demand and expect more from our public officials. I get the impression that Jamaican officials, not unlike 'Backra' of old or Louis XIV for that matter, see themselves as preordained to rule over their subjects.

The arrogance of these officials who should be serving the people is unbearable. After all, their mandate is to serve us the people, not the other way around. We need to make it clear to these 'neo-colonialists' that the days of 'Backra' are long over. Jamaicans should demand and expect more from Chief Justice Wolfe.

I am, etc.,
