Jamaican cops seek suspect in 6-y-o's killing
published: Saturday | December 24, 2005

Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

The Hunts Bay police are looking for a suspect in connection with Thursday night's killing of a six-year-old girl and the wounding of five other persons, during a drive-by shooting in Olympic Gardens, St. Andrew.

There are reports that the residents have proposed to stage several nights of prayer vigil for Oksana Douglas, a student of Dupont Primary School. Among the injured persons are four men aged 29, 28, 23 and 20, along with a 14-year-old.

According to the police, reports relating to the incident are that at about 8:00 p.m., little Oksana was among a number of persons returning from a birthday party in the area, when, on reaching the intersection of Tower Avenue and Ebony Road, a white Toyota Corolla station wagon motor car drove up. The occupants of the vehicle opened fire on the group of people and drove away.

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Acting Deputy Superintendent Michael Phipps, crime officer for the St. Andrew South Police Division, did not link the shooting to any gang feud.

Allegations are that the prime suspect in the shooting is a man who had ran away recently from the Olympic Gardens com-munity, following a dispute with another man. Further allegations are that the suspect returned to the area on Thursday night.

Informed police sources said the suspect spotted the man who he wanted to kill. Reports are that he opened fire on the man who eluded him. The stray bullets struck the six persons, who were among others attempting to run to safer grounds.
