What now for Adams?
published: Friday | December 30, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE VERDICT of the court is final; justice has been served. Now is the time for the JCF to act appropriately in preparing Reneto Adams and his colleagues to be utilised in the best interest of Jamaica's security. He certainly enjoys the confidence of most Jamaicans and, therefore, is certainly needed to work with communities, gathering intelligence and executing warrants when needed.

Contrary to many critics, I certainly feel that well-armed and dangerous, hardened and fearless criminals must be confronted with superior well-armed and tough crimefighters.

Notwithstanding, however, I am a great believer in community policing and intelligence-driven policing. The two, however, must never be seen as mutually exclusive. Instead, the two must be wisely applied parallel to each other, or the most appropriate utilised in a given situation. According to popular sentiments, Reneto Adams certainly seemed to have depended heavily on intelligence before he executed warrants for arrests and apprehension.

Will the Police Commissioner and the Government appease the sector interest of detractors - including human rights groups and the British and European political interests - by banishing Adams to Never-Never Land? Whatever happens must be done with the security of Jamaicans foremost in the minds of the decision makers. Jamaicans are watching and waiting with bated breath on the next move concerning their 'folk hero', Senior Superin-tendent Reneto Valentino DeCordova Adams.

I am, etc.,

DELROY SCARLETT
