MORE THAN 60 supervisory workers at the St. Ann Bauxite Limited, formerly Kaiser, have stopped working to protest against the non-payment of increased wages by the company.
General secretary of the Union of Technical and Supervisory Personnel(UTASP), St. Patrice Ennis, told The Gleaner Power 106 News that the workers have not turned up for duty since midnight Wednesday.
According to him they took protest action after the company failed to respond to their concerns regarding an increase in their wage package following the expiration of their contract in 2003.
"We are now embarking on a third year without the contract, and we have been negotiating for over a year, and we are unable to reach any reasonable settlement, or hear anything that is reasonable from the company so far," he said.
Mr. Ennis said the company was offering 25 per cent over three years, but this was "unrealistic". "Twenty-five per cent over three years would not enable the workers to keep even a near pace with inflation," he argued.
