Bishop criticises Christmas music
published: Saturday | December 31, 2005

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (CMC):

ROMAN CATHOLIC Bishop, Vincent Darius has expressed concern over the type of songs being played in Grenada during the Christmas season.

"(In) Many of our local Christmas songs you don't hear the word 'Christ' being called," he said. "Drinking, eating, feting, that's the things Christ is absent. And we claimed that this is a Christian society, a Christian country and when people in a Christian country are afraid to proclaim Christ we must become fearful, because we wonder what next will happen."

DOMINATED THE AIRWAVES

Parang, indigenous Christmas music with a Latin American Spanish influence, have dominated the airwaves, replacing the traditional North American Christmas carols and prompting callers to various radio talk shows to place a ban on some of the offensive parang songs.

Bishop Darius also told a church gathering that there is need for collective effort in dealing with the social and economic development of the country.

"You look at what's happening in the political arena. For the sake of power you will destroy each other. What matters is the good of the country. And while politicians are fighting for power, hundreds are in misery. The quality of life diminishes day by day for many people."
