Policeman beaten by colleagues buried
published: Saturday | December 31, 2005

- NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER

Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas views the body of Grantley Waite at a funeral service at Richmond Park Church of the Nazarene in St. Andrew, yesterday.

Corporal Waite, who was allegedly beaten by his colleagues in Mount Salem, St. James, died on December 16 at the Kingston Public Hospital.

At the service, the tributes flowed in memory of the 48-year-old Waite who dedicated 30 years of service to the Jamaica Constabulary Force. But consistent in the tributes from the colleagues of the deceased police corporal, were themes of anger and regret over the circumstances that led to the death of the man described as a model public servant.

Corporal Waite died one month after he was reportedly injured during an altercation at the Mount Salem Police Station in St. James. It is reported that Corporal Waite, who was stationed at Half-Way Tree in the St. Andrew Central Police Division, had gone to the Mount Salem Police Station for water when the altercation ensued with other cops.

At the time of the incident it was reported that Corporal Waite, who had identified himself as a policeman, was accused of impersonating police personnel.
