IN JUNE Flair threw out a diet challenge to readers. Many sent in letters, faxes and emails wanting to challenge the sabbatical and Kellogg's Special K Cereal diets.

The many applicants were reduced to three challengers - Sabbatical - wife and a mother Peaches Richards, and for Kellogg's Special K Cereal, then 19-year-old, 216 lb Danique Williams and Julian White, who was 47 pounds overweight and from Bog Walk, St. Catherine - and they were sent on their fat-crunching ways. After eight weeks, more than 30 lb collectively were lost.

For this special issue of Flair we did a check in with the diet challenge participants to find out if they have been keeping off those pounds.

Kellogg's Special K' Cereal Challengers:

How it works: Lose up to six lbs in two weeks with the Kellogg's two week challenge, said the newspaper advertisements that appeared publicly.

JULIAN WHITE

Being on the diet was good, although the cereal was cloying. Miss White lost six lb after the eight weeks.

Age: 29

Weight: 180 lb, now close to 154 lb

Height: Five feet, three inches

How she's dieting: I lost a lot of the 180 lb however, I have regained some of the weight. Even my tummy that was reducing in size is growing again. Truthfully, the cereals are very expensive. I pay close to $300 for a small box and I use at least four per week. Due to this, I had to cut back to one box per week.

Currently, I eat more fruits and this has become my number one diet. I also do a lot of walking. I do this as being on the Flair diet challenge I realised that I could lose weight if I want to.

Kellogg's Special K' Cereal Challenger:

DANIQUE WILLIAMS

Miss Williams was 206 lb after the eight weeks.

Age: 20

Weight: 216 lb, she now weighs 202 lb

Height: Five feet, four inches

How she has kept off the pounds: "I have been making healthier choices such as not missing breakfast, I eat cereal every morning not necessarily Kellogg's Special K', and I still use skimmed milk that was required to have with Kellogg's. I also do aerobics three times per week.

I feel good, but I'm still trying to lose the rest of the weight as my goalweight is 140 lb.

Sabbatical Diet Challenge

How it works: Eat like a king for six mornings, fast one morning.

PEACHES RICHARDS

At the end of the eight weeks Mrs. Richards was so happy, she had lost 14 lb including six inches off her waist. Today, Mrs. Richards is still dropping those pounds.

A wife and mother of four boys, she is also hypertensive. Currently, she is still on the sabbatical diet and still visits the diet specialist, Dr. Robert Robinson at the Apex Medical Centre in St. Andrew.

Age: 40

Height: 5 feet 5 inches

Weight: 279 lb, now 261

Long-term goalweight: 160 lb
