LETTER OF THE DAY - Time for the Church to stand up
published: Monday | January 2, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE TIME has come to seriously ask the men and women of God in Jamaica, at what point do they intend to stand up and fearlessly and effectively protest the wholesale slaughter of our people? The murder rate for 2005 has already exceeded the record set in 2004 by over 100 homicides, and unless we do something radical and revolutionary to reverse this trend, it will be no surprise that a new record will be achieved in 2006.

I am asking the real men and women of God in Jamaica to tell me how many souls have to be butchered or shot to pieces, before they are prepared to take a united stand against the demonic forces that threaten to destroy the very foundations of our society. What will it take to get the church to boldly sound the alarm that Jamaica is dying? Ten thousand dead in one year? Maybe one hundred thousand homicides in a calendar year is what it will take, before we will muster the courage to organise a march to Jamaica House and two hundred thousand have to die before we can organise 'God's People Party'.

Wake up, Jamaica. They are murdering our children. They are murdering the economic future of this nation.

WE COULD ALL BE GUILTY

The recent drive-by shooting of one of the sweetest six-year-old children in Kingston, should make us all realise that we have all become cold and callous Christians and are just as guilty of the next murder, that is if we stand by and do nothing to change the status quo.

I believe we have arrived at that point in our history that requires serious God-fearing men and women to unite with a political objective, one which will focus on a mandate to direct the nation towards righteousness, peace and prosperity, instead of corruption, garrisons and tribalism. Rosa Parks stood up and made a difference for her black sisters and brothers in America.

I believe it is time for the Church in Jamaica to stand up and make not only their voices heard, but their Godly power and presence felt.

Remember, 'Evil will flourish when good men and women stand by and do nothing.'

I am, etc.,
