Billboard crackdown
published: Monday | January 2, 2006

THE ST. MARY Parish Council, is warning that the erection of illegal billboards will not be tolerated in the new year.

According to Sheldon Peart, secretary/manager at the St. Mary Parish Council, in keeping with the Control of Advertisement Regulations (1978), as of January 31, all illegal advertisements in the parish will be removed by the council.

LIASE WITH COUNCIL

Mr. Peart told The Gleaner that currently a number of illegal signs are erected in St. Mary. "What we are asking persons to do, is to come into our office, fill out an application form, or write a letter to the council, requesting permission to erect signs and then pay a small fee," he said. The fee ranges from $500 to $10,000.

Mr. Peart also said persons should state the size of the advertisement they wish to erect and the location they plan to use, adding that approval for these signs would be renewed annually.

Meanwhile, the St. Mary Parish Council is advising that an encroachment fee of $6,000 will be imposed on persons who illegally erect signs.
