Police nab 60
published: Tuesday | January 3, 2006

PORT-OF-SPAIN (CMC):

POLICE ARRESTED 60 people in a massive security operation in Central Trinidad on the weekend. Among those arrested are three Guyanese nationals believed to be in the country illegally.

The 60 persons were arrested in connection with various offences, including rape, robbery, shooting with intent, wounding, housebreaking and larceny and drug possession. The accused are expected to appear in court today.

One Guyanese was arrested while on duty as a security guard at a popular shopping mall in Chaguanas.

FOUND PASSPORTS

According to media reports, police found passports from the United States and Ghana in the possession of the 31-year-old security guard, who was dressed in full uniform.

The second is a 38-year-old, who was wanted by police after he escaped from lawmen in 2003 at Piarco International Airport before he could be deported to Guyana.

Police said the third man, who is 21, could not provide them with documents to show that he entered the country legally.

Officials of the Immigration Department are investigating the three cases, and are working with the police before charges are laid.

Meanwhile, a Trinidadian couple arrested for trafficking 30 grammes of cocaine was also among those arrested.
