Crime on Cabinet retreat agenda
published: Wednesday | January 4, 2006

THE LONG-AWAITED Proceeds of Crime Act will be high on the agenda of a three-day Cabinet retreat, according to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister.

The retreat, which starts tomorrow, will focus on the legislative agenda for the parliamentary year.

Other priority areas will be solutions to Jamaica's troubling crime situation, job creation, poverty eradication and the national energy policy.

SUGAR, CRICKET

How African, Caribbean and Pacific states will be affected by the new European Union sugar regime which takes effect in July, is another topic up for discussion.

Plans for the Cricket World Cup which is scheduled to bowl off in Jamaica at Sabina Park in 2007, is also on the Cabinet's cards.

Government hopes legis-lation of the Proceeds of Crime Act will help it seize ill-gotten assets of drug lords and community dons.

The passage of this bill has been on Government's agenda for some time. In November 2004, National Security Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, said he would push for its legislation in 2005.

In late 2005, the minister said the administration would seek the assistance of British experts to advise a Joint Select Committee of Parliament on the functions of the United Kingdom's Proceeds of Crime Act.
