VOLUNTEER OF THE WEEK:
Touching lives in Jamaica

published: Saturday | January 7, 2006

Some So Others May Earn/Exist, is the acronym that motivates Norma Brown-Bell to touch the lives of people everywhere she goes.

" I am a little-thing person, for it is the little things that people never had that really make a difference in their lives", she asserts.

Professionally she is a motivational speaker and conducts communication workshops, where she teaches effective public speaking. All these skills she applies whenever she volunteers for the legion of charities across the island.

Volunteer Today asked Norma, Why do you volunteer in the way you do?

It is dear to my heart, it is a way of life just to reach out and touch someone. Moreover, I realise that needs work on my heart; as long as a person has a real need and I can help, I just cannot resist helping.

25 years of charity

How long have you been giving freely to the unfortunate? It has been 25 years.

Could you explain some of the ways that you freely contribute with your talents? Well, I am currently assisting at the Duhaney Pen Basic School and we are working with an aim to start a computer programme.

In addition, during the Christmas season I solicited enough donations like toys and other gifts for all 79 students, by just asking people I know.

What has been your most memorable moment as a volunteer? Unlike some folks, I am not able to show you a huge organisation, but acts such as helping a parent to feed and send his or her children to school make me happy.

You say you think it is important that people are able to effectively communicate and so you apply your professional talents as a teacher of public relations when volunteering; Why? Well I think the importance of effective communication cannot be discredited, because it facilitates the process of peaceful co-existence, something I believe is sadly lacking in our society.
