SPALDINGS, Clarendon:
SWIFT ACTION by the Spaldings and Mocho police and good support from residents of Sunberry and Victoria in north-west Clarendon between Saturday evening and yesterday morning resulted in the capture of three gunmen, the seizure of three illegal guns and the impounding of a stolen motor car.
According to the Spaldings police, about 7:00 p.m. Saturday, four men armed with guns went to a grocery shop at Sanguinetti in Clarendon. The four, all of whom reportedly brandished guns, held an attendant at gunpoint and demanded money.
The police reported that the men's demand was met and they took an undetermined sum, before escaping in a waiting grey Nissan Sunny motor car, which was driven off toward the Cumberland area. The attendant was not hurt.
The police were alerted and personnel from the Spaldings police station turned up at the crime scene and were told that the men had fled in the direction of Cumberland. They sought and got assistance from other police in the nearby Manchester division. When the police arrived at Cumberland, a man who was apparently on the look out, fled the scene leaving the Nissan motor car behind. A search of the motor car resulted in the discovery of three home-made guns and ammunition.
It is reported that the men were spotted in the Sunberry-Victoria area by vigilant residents who alerted the Spaldings and Mocho police and quick action by the lawmen from that station resulted in them being cornered and captured about 9:30 a.m. yesterday. The fourth gunman is still on the run.
