Winning start for Wignall

WIGNALL

NATIONAL 110m hurdles record holder Maurice Wignall made a winning start to the 2006 indoor season with victory in the 60m hurdles at the Father Diamond Open held at George Mason University on Saturday.

Wignall, a fourth place finisher at the Athens Olympic Games, took the 60m hurdles event in 7.75 seconds.

He defeated fellow Jamaican Ricardo Melbourne, who was second in 7.84 seconds.

Elsewhere, at the Hoosier Open, former Jamaica junior and Carifta Games Under-20 200m gold medallist Nickesha Anderson was a sprint double winner.

Anderson, representing Missouri Baptist, won the 60m dash in 7.55 seconds ahead of Amber Plowden of Invaders (7.60).

SHERLENE DUNCAN

Sherlene Duncan, formerly of Edwin Allen and also at Missouri Baptist, finished fifth in 7.87.

In the 200m Anderson, formerly of Herbert Morrison, raced to victory in 24.06 seconds. She beat Mary Danner (24.18), while Duncan (25.75) again finished outside the top five.

Natalie Dyke, daughter of Edwin Allen's coach Michael, was sixth in the women's 400m in 1:02.25. She also attends Missouri Baptist.

Former national junior representatives Tamara Francis (5.38m) and Nadina Marsh (5.37m) were third and fourth respectively in the women's long jump. Marsh was also fourth in the women's 60m hurdles in 9.26, behind winner Courtney Johnson of Indiana 8.52.

Camoi Hood was sixth in the men's shot put with a throw of 14.99m, while his former Jamaica junior teammate, Steve Hammond, threw 13.62 for 10th place.

Meanwhile, at the Harvard versus Northeastern Meet held at Gordon Track & Tennis Center, Harvard University, former national junior representative Zara Northover was a double winner.

In the shot put, Northover threw 15.95m to beat her teammates Patricia Harrison (12.31m) and Krystina Valdez (10.75m) in a Northeastern top three finish.

In the women's weight throw, Northover, representing Northeastern, threw 15.75m to beat Howard's pair Maureen Boyle (13.31m) and Ellenor Brown (12.24).
