LETTER OF THE DAY - Disorder in New Kingston
published: Wednesday | January 11, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MUCH HAS been said and written about the disorder that takes place in New Kingston, especially at nights. We, as residents of the area, would like to add our voice to the discussion.

Many of us have had to endure sleepless nights due to the many sessions that take place at the various locations around New Kingston. Often, these sessions go well beyond the 2 a.m. cut-off point (for weekends) stipulated by law and the music is played at such a high volume that sometimes windows will vibrate. Clubs as well as outdoor sessions held on Old Hope Road operate very close to residences and play their music in the open air, causing much disturbance. These events are even held on weeknights, robbing residents of a peaceful night's sleep when they have work the following day. All we are asking is that these clubs respect their neighbours, abide by the law and find a way to contain their music.

Events that are held at these places often attract prominent sponsors, including various media houses. Are these sponsors aware that these sessions have been contributing to a reduction in the quality of life in the community? Perhaps citizens groups across the island should consider boycotting companies that repeatedly sponsor events that infringe on their rights to peacefully enjoy their property.

NIGHT LAW

The law has to be respected, even at nights. Mayor McKenzie has tried to enforce the law in New Kingston and has been criticised in many quarters for his actions. However, it seems to us that the mayor is just doing his job, and should be commended for doing so. Knutsford Boulevard and its environs cannot be allowed to disintegrate into night-time disorder. The vendors (even the pan chicken men) cannot be allowed to clog the sidewalks. Parking regulations have to be respected. What would happen if there were to be a major disaster at night with Knutsford Boulevard congested with double and triple parked cars and the sidewalks clogged with vendors' stalls?

We are, etc.,
