published: Wednesday | January 11, 2006

Angelo Laurence, Gleaner Writer

MANCHESTER, Mandeville:

SEVEN LUCKY students will have their college and university tuition paid by Alumina Partners of Jamaica (Alpart) through its scholarship programme, while they study for degrees in various disciplines.

The students are currently attending Northern Caribbean University (NCU), the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology, G.C. Foster College, and the College of Agriculture, Science and Education.

SECOND TIME

This is the second batch of students to receive scholarships from Alpart since Darrel Harriman, the company's general manager, initiated the programme in 2004. On that occasion, seven students also received scholarships.

According to Lance Neita, public relations manager at Alpart, the company had put a ten-year plan in place to assist students obtain education at the island's universities and colleges. He said at the end of that period, Alpart is expected to have awarded scholarships amounting to approximately $16 million.

The students who were presented with their scholarships at the Alpart Sports Club last Thursday are Khandi Ford, Keron King, Omar Wellington, Venroy Watson, Saran Robinson, Odean Bradshaw and Kenya Hanson.

All the awardees are from communities near Alpart.
