Errol Greene wants dump relocated
published: Thursday | January 12, 2006

Yahneake Sterling, Staff Reporter

NATIONAL SOLID Waste Management Authority head Errol Greene, has expressed a desire to see the Riverton City Dump moved from its current location.

According to Mr. Greene, the chief executive officer of the NSWMA, the current location of the dump is far from ideal, as it is surrounded by several communities such as Seaview Gardens, Patrick City, Washington Gardens, Portmore and Plantation Heights.

"I would love to see it relocated," he said.

Mr. Greene said a remote area, such as mined out bauxite land, could serve as a more ideal location away from inner-city communities. He said this would allow for better monitoring of the dump.

He added that, if the dump were to be relocated, it would cost far less than now, as when there is a fire, cost can amount to $2 million per day.

"It has been costing $1.5 million per day since Friday to get this current fire under control and the clock is still ticking," he said.

The current fire at the dump, according to one resident, might have been caused when one of the trucks carrying garbage dumped material that was already on fire.

Mr. Greene said that, since the recent improvement at the site, everything has been vandalised.
