Lara set to play, Powell still injured
published: Thursday | January 12, 2006

LARA - FILE

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

BRIAN LARA, arguably the world's best batsman, looks set to take part in the Carib Beer Series, when his native Trinidad & Tobago face Guyana at Guaracara Park next Friday.

Lara's appearance in regional first-class matches in recent times has been quite limited, but T&T Cricket Board Deryck Murray has been in contact with the batting superstar, who has indicated his willingness to play.

"I have not been in contact with Brian as yet, but Deryck has been speaking to him, and from all indications Lara is fit and willing to join his teammates in their bid to win the regional cricket crown," T&T manager Omar Khan told the Trinidad Guardian newspaper.

NURSING INJURED FINGER

Lara, however, has been nursing an injured finger, and has been receiving treatment from physiotherapist Lisa Niles for the past four weeks.

He is expected to take the place of Jason Mohammed, who will be vice-captain of the Young West Indies on a tour of Pakistan and the 2006 ICC Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka over the next few weeks.

Mohammed made his debut for the two-island republic in the 282-run win over Jamaica on the weekend, and had scores of 18 and 21.

The news on Ricardo Powell, another West Indies batsman, who is yet to play in the competition, is less encouraging though.

CHEST MUSCLE STRAIN

Powell is still trying to recover from a muscle strain in his chest.

"Powell visited the doctor, and he told him to rest for another two weeks, while taking medication, so he will not be considered for the Guyana game," Khan said.

T&T, who are looking for their first regional first-class title since 1985, top the standings with 18 points.

"We are well placed in the competition right now, and theplayers need to keep the intensity if they are to bring home the title this season," Khan said.

"We have three home games and we are aiming to get full points from the encounters. We have started very well with the outright win against Jamaica, and we are hoping to repeat this against the other teams."
