What of rights of the innocent?
published: Friday | January 13, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DR. CAROLYN GOMES and those in the human rights movement need to tell us how we are to get rid of the criminal elements among us. How come we do not hear from the defenders of human rights when innocent Jamaicans are being murdered daily by criminals? We are now the murder capital of the world. One would think that the focus of any group that's interested in solving that level of murder would be how to help the security forces solve the problem, instead people with obvious political agendas are using this most serious situation to score points.

Let's be clear: It's the responsibility of the Government to provide security for its citizens and, therefore, they cannot escape blame for what is happening. However, groups that claim to be acting in the interest of justice must understand that acts that give or appear to give protection to criminal elements only help to embolden criminals.

What we need is a national effort to rid Jamaica of this scourge so that those of us who want to invest in Jamaica, to return and live in Jamaica can feel free to do so. Crime is a national problem, let's all treat it that way. Only then can we restore our island home to the place where it belongs, not #1 when it comes to crime, but #1 in investment, tourism and a place to call home.

I am, etc.,
