IF YOU'VE never been to Rae Town, at least Digicel gave its guests an idea. The self-proclaimed bigger, better GSM network threw another media party, 'Rae Town Style', at the refurbished Countryside Club in Half-Way Tree.
The venue was innovatively decorated with zinc fences with (the graffiti and all) even a bus stop with a route 37 sign on it. Now, a dance in Rae Town 'back then' was a colourful affair and persons came dressed for the part. The diamond socks, Clark's shoes, pants with one leg rolled up, wigs and sparklingly shined boots were the dress code of the evening.
GOOD OLD DAYS
Comedy duo Ity and Fancy Cat took guests old enough to remember back to the good old days as they recalled some of the dance moves. They were adamant, "no willy bouncing". This was a night for rock steady and ska.
Klassique, the original Rae Town sound with Senor Daley, Krazy Kris and the crew at the turntables pounded out the hits, but there were also live performances from Welton Irie, Lone Ranger and 'the teacher' (I prefer toaster supreme), U Roy. The original toaster expressed disbelief that after 40 years he was still performing and was delighted at the 'young people' who knew his music. Along with DJ Sancho, the aforementioned trio performed in a four-the-hard-way segment that elicited plenty 'forwards' and 'lighters' from the audience.
The aptly-named food stations (didn't think we'd forgotten about that), like Gleaner Grotto, Observer Oasis and Hot Spot, were there to fill the stomachs. Asham, sprat, bammy in coconut milk, curried goat with white rice, roast fish and steam bammy, jerk chicken and pork were on the menu. Mouths watered, simply put.
There were phones and credit to be won. Shoe-whitening contest, domino games, three-card man and an epic ska contest where four ladies took all the prizes were part of the activities.
It was an evening for plenty of excitement, good food, vibes and good old dancehall sounds.
