Late goal denies Boys' Town again

THE BOYS' Town Red Brigade were seconds away from securing a second thrilling victory at the Collie Smith Drive Sports ground, however, an 11th-hour goal by Waterhouse striker Jomo Gordon doused their ambitions, forcing them to settle for a 2-2 draw to close play in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League second round.

Boys' Town just can't seem to get rid of the nagging habit of conceding late goals and yesterday's game was the fifth game in which they had done so, so far this season.

Oneil Thompson mis-kicked a pass played over deep from the midfield. This allowed Gordon to pounce and drifting wide of goal, he fired a near-post scorcher to rescue a share of the points for his team and deny the Red Brigade. For Boys' Town technical director Andrew Price, the habit is a painful one.

AT A LOSS FOR WORDS

"It's a lack of concentration. With seconds left to go, you need to have commitment and there was none in the last five minutes of the game. It's a gut-wrenching experience ... I'm just at a loss for words." Price lamented.

However, Thompson's error overshadowed what had other-wise been a solid per-formance. It was the big last man that put the home team in the lead as early as the eighth minute. From 40 yards out, he unleashed a cannon ball which boomed past a fully-stretched Waterhouse custodian Richard Mcallum. But the potent left of Irvino English would set up the Waterhouse response.

English hit a curling free kick from pretty much the same distance as Thompson, although it was partially saved by Boys' Town goalkeeper Philmore Crumbie. Jermaine Grey was on-hand to slot home a ball bouncing about on the goal line, bringing his side level in the 44th minute.

DEFLECTION

The burly Boys' Town centre half would refuse to be be outdone, however, Michael Campbell was brought down on the edge of the area. He stepped up to curl another free kick around McCallum who looked to be caught flat-footed by a slight deflection in the 83rd minute.

This surely looked to be the win for Boys' Town to close out the second round, that was until Gordon's late change of script. Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough was simply pleased to come away with a point from Collie Smith Drive.

" A draw is a very good result at Boys' Town. We had the grit and determination to come back twice and I think that's something to be proud of." he said.
