'Zekes' murder trial starts today

PHIPPS

THE DOUBLE murder trial of Matthews Lane resident Donald 'Zekes' Phipps begins today in the Home Circuit Court.

Phipps and Garfield Williams, a farmer, from St. Thomas, are charged jointly with the murders of Rodney Leroy Farquharson and Dayton Williams, of Bayshore Park, east Kingston.

The burnt bodies of the two were discovered on April 15 in an open lot at Rose Lane near to Matthews Lane, downtown Kingston.

Phipps is being represented by K. Churchill Neita, Q.C., and Lloyd McFarlane. George Soutar is repre-senting Williams.

Williams is on bail while Phipps has been in custody since his arrest on the murder charges. Phipps is also facing charges for unlawful possession of over $18 million, which was found by police at his upper St. Andrew home on May 21 last year.

Paula Llewellyn, Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and Donald Bryan, acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions are prosecuting.
