Embarrassed, disappointed

THE EDITOR, Sir:
AT THE Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, as a departing Jamaican, I was embarrassed and disappointed to observe a disabled, wheelchair-bound passenger, being forced to sit precariously at an acute angle on an escalator while attempting to access the upper-level departure gates from that airport facility's ground-level departure lounge. The situation got more disturbing when the (overweight) disabled passenger was forced to stand with the assistance of persons who seemed to be family members, the supporting wheelchair attendant and the many visitors waiting in-tow to use the escalator.
Given a concern for health, safety and welfare of the international travelling public, it is hoped that the current foreign-based operators of the Sangster Airport will quickly move to install elevators to complement its escalators in order to properly accommodate the disabled.
