MAYOR OF Kingston Councillor Desmond McKenzie, says that the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) will be taking immediate legal action against the owners of a number of premises in the Bedford Park, Kingston 10 area for breaches of the Parochial Roads Act and the Kingston Development Orders Zoning Regulations.
The mayor took the decision after a tour of the Bedford Park area, along with officers of the KSAC, to see first-hand the developments which have sparked a number of complaints from residents of the area.
The residents have been complaining of creeping commercialisation of the residential-zoned community. During the tour the mayor observed, among other things, that Bedford Park Close, which had previously been a dead end area, has been opened to traffic travelling to Constant Spring Road.
HEAVILY TRAFFICKED AREA
He said this turned a once-quiet residential area into a heavily trafficked one which now runs into the very commercial Constant Spring Road area, without any approval from the KSAC.
It was also observed that there are signs advertising number 37 Bedford Park Avenue as a commercial venture, despite the fact that area is zoned solely for residential use.
Mayor McKenzie said that he will be referring the matter to the KSAC's lawyer, and that notices will be served on several owners for breaches of the Parochial Roads Act, as well as the Development Orders which govern the zoning of the area.
The mayor said that he has also noted a number of other illegal uses of premises in the Bedford Park area, as well as other parts of the Corporate Area, and that he, "Intends to start taking very serious action against the commercialisation of these residential areas in breach of the various acts and regulations of the KSAC".
