ST LUCIA: Former PM to pay damages in slander suit
published: Tuesday | January 17, 2006

CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC):

A HIGH Court has ordered former St Lucia prime minister Dr Vaughan Lewis to pay EC$76,000 (US$28,148) in damages to Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony.

Anthony had successfully filed a lawsuit against Lewis over remarks he made regarding an agreement between the Government and an off-shore bank more than two years ago.

"I was hurt, injured, distressed, embarrassed, disappointed, especially as they were the words of a one-time personal friend," Anthony told reporters.

The case was heard almost two years ago, and on Monday, Justice Ola Mae Edwards ruled that for his public remarks about his former friend, Lewis, who served as Prime Minister in 1996, should pay Anthony damages totalling EC$76,000.

She noted that while Lewis had tendered an apology on demand to the Prime Minister it had been done "in terms which Dr. Anthony did not find acceptable".
