Officials: Atlanta fire an accident, but probe continues
published: Tuesday | January 17, 2006

Derrick A. Scott, Gleaner Writer

ATLANTA, Georgia:

DEKALB COUNTY Fire investigators in Atlanta, Georgia, say the fire that claimed the lives of three Jamaicans - Tracy Ann, Delia and Dijon Plummer III - just before Christmas, was an accident. "(We) know that the fire is accidental and (we) know that it started in the area somewhere near the fireplace," says Captain Eric Jackson, public information officer of the Dekalb County Fire Department.

In an interview with The Gleaner, Captain Jackson said that although the investigators have reached this preliminary conclusion, they want to be more certain of their findings and the investigation continues. "We are still looking at some things and are not in a position to close the investigation as yet," Captain Jackson said.

According to Captain Jackson, "there is no guarantee that they would determine what started the fire ... but there are just a few more things they need to take a look at, just to be fairly sure as to how the fire started."

The Plummer family was interviewed by fire officials last week, but officials declined to say if information from these interviews contributed to the determination that the fire was accidental. The three members of the Plummer family perished in a fire on December 22, when their five-bedroom house was engulfed in flames. They were laid to rest in Atlanta on December 27.
