MEADOWBROOK HIGH survived an early scare to eventually bash Campion 37-20 in the lone Southern Conference game of the KFC-sponsored ISSA High School league yesterday at Meadowbrook High.
Campion, who now fall to a 0-4 record, got off to a promising start and actually led 8-7 at the start of the first half.
However, Meadowbrook, led by a 12-point, 13-rebound double by Dominique Bryan, eventually rallied to win the game in convincing fashion and propelled themselves to a 2-3 record.
They also triumphed in Under-16 play, beating Campion 46-21.
In Tuesday's action, St. George's College snatched their first win of the season when they demolished St. Andrew Technical High 72-36 at St. George's College on Tuesday.
Floor general Joscelyn Campbell led the way for the winners who had lost their previous two home games, when he put up a 22-point performance. He got most assistance by Chad Murdock, who added 18 points and six steals.
WONDERFUL FEELING
"It's a wonderful feeling to win especially after coming off two straight home losses," remarked a very pleased Clifford Brown, coach of the St. George's team. "We can only start climbing this mountain which we have delayed for a while, but I think the boys are ready."
The team, which now holds a 1-2 record, flew out of the gates and with a 12-2 run immediately put STATHS on the back foot. The visitors fell to a 27-7 first quarter lead from which they were never able to recover.
"We started the game a bit lacklustre, we went out there with no defence. We picked up the game in the second quarter but overall they did play a better game than us," was STATHS coach Everton Carthy's analysis of the game.
In fact the school from Bumper Hall did play a much better second quarter and though already down by a huge margin, were only narrowly outscored 12-9.
However, down by 23 at half-time with a 39-16 score, St. George's were always odds on favourites to emerge victors.
POWERLESS
They would pick up where they left off in the third quarter, running the ball at a STATHS team which was once again powerless to stop them. They extended the lead 59-26, outscoring their opponents 20-10.
Brown believes that the big win maybe just what the team needed, albeit having a tough road to travel ahead of them.
"The top four teams go through and we need to win all our matches. Looking at the fixtures we have five matches in less than 15 days, but we have analysed it and are mentally prepared for the task," he said.
In Tuesday's other Southern Conference games, St. Cathe-rine slipped by Jamaica College 56-52 and Excelsior stopped Jose Marti 47-43.
In the Under-16 competition, the St. George's vs STATHS contest was not played, while Jamaica College beat St. Catherine 49-42 and Bridgeport squeezed past Excelsior 35-31.
