DESPITE POOR results in his first year at the helm, West Indies cricket captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul has backed himself to battle to lift the team and improve his returns.
Speaking yesterday morning, Chanderpaul, who took over from Brian Lara as team skipper, said he was excited to be again be chosen by the team management to lead the team on a tour of New Zealand in February and March.
Chanderpaul captained the team in 11 Test matches and lost eight, drew two and won just one.
WILLING TO FIGHT
"Last year was a tough year for me, but I am always willing to fight for West Indies cricket," Chanderpaul said early in the morning.
"As captain of the West Indies cricket team, I understand there will be some criticism and that comes with the territory.
"Leading the West Indies is an honour and a pleasure for me.
