Be proactive in crime fight - PMI vice-president
published: Friday | January 20, 2006

PARCHMENT

PERSONS AND organisations are being urged to be proactive in the fight against crime by Donna Parchment, vice-president of the Peace Management Initiative (PMI).

"The PMI needs solid volunteers to support the work in communities. We need people who can provide training to young people, provide job training and jobs, and funding for humanitarian relief," said Miss Parchment.

The non-profit organisation that specialises in conflict management also needs the voluntary contributions of mediators, psychologists, medical doctors, as well as counsellors for its victim response programme.

"If people are willing to give their time and resources and agree to certain ethical standards, we are wide open to those who are interested in supporting the work of the PMI," said Miss Parchment.

A release from the Jamaica Information Service said that since its establishment in 2002, the PMI has contributed significantly to the diffusion of violence in several communities across the island, with particular attention to those in the Corporate Area that have a long history of violence.

According to Miss Parchment, anyone who feels that his or her community could benefit from the intervention of the PMI can contact the development officer, Damion Hutchinson, to discuss the main issues affecting the community and possible solutions. The applicant should also mention any influential and respected persons in the area, such as the president of a football club or teachers.
