published: Sunday | January 22, 2006

- NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER
Deputy Superintendent Anthony Powell (right) and Det. Seargent Radcliffe Levy take a close look at the AK 47 rifle and a shotgun at the Half-Way Tree Police Station. The guns were recovered yesterday during a joint police-military operation in the August Town area. During the operation, they recovered the AK 47 and a shotgun along with 29 rounds. Five men were taken into custody for questioning.

TWO WEAPONS were recovered from the August Town, St. Andrew community yesterday, during an early morning joint police-military operation.

Five men from the community were also taken into custody and are being questioned by the police.

The guns recovered were an AK 47 and a semi-automatic shotgun.

According to Senior Superintendent (SSP) Gladstone Wright, the operation started about 6:00 a.m. yesterday.

It was headed by Acting Deputy Superintendent McArthur Sutherland and Superintendent Anthony Powell, both of the Half-Way Tree police.

SSP Wright noted that even though intelligence received by the police led them to believe that more weapons would have been found, the operation was still considered a success.

According to him, there are still many weapons in August Town in the possession of residents.

SSP Wright noted that operations such as yesterday's would continue until all these weapons were recovered.

He urged residents with information which could assist the police in their weapon recovery efforts, to tell what they know.
